Considering of Getting a Car?
Geelong public transportation network options are not as variety as Melbourne. Two popular ways is by train to Melbourne and buses within Geelong city itself. There are no trams in Geelong. It is a norm to travel to universities or work by buses, hence it is essential to rent a property nearby bus stops. We suggest, for research students travelling to universities in odd hours as well as those working late shifts to get a reliable vehicle. It may not be necessary to get a brand new, instead look for a reliable used version. Geelong is blessed with numerous used car dealers with vehicles as cheap as AUD 500. Making the Right Choice!
Do not make hasty decision. A too cheap vehicle may need to visit mechanics often. Get something with a reasonable price. We have experienced, that car ranging from AUD 3000 to AUD 6000 are pretty much reliable and posed less problem for at least 3 or 4 years to come. Always go for low mileage records and definitely test drive them. It is essential to buy a vehicle with Road Worthy Certificate (RWC). If you wonder what is this, it is similar to our PUSPAKOM check. Without RWC, it is illegal to drive the vehicle, however, used car dealers can legally sell them even without RWC.
Buying a car is as easy as buying a candy. Once you have the cash, sign a piece of paper (agreement), you pay then straight away drive home your "new" car. Usually dealer will take care of all the rest with VicRoad(like PUSPAKOM in Malaysia). It is best to purchase a vehicle with REGO expiring not too soon. REGO is similar to RoadTax in Malaysia. This usually comes together with the car when purchase. Make sure you deal properly and clearly to include RWC and REGO when purchasing from the used car dealer.
What Happen After That?
Approximately one month before your REGO expires, you will receive a letter from VicRoad containing your new REGO sticker, which is only valid when payment is made. Payment can be made at any Post Office, online, or via the phone. Insurance is not compulsory. However, it may come in handy if you have one. Popular insurance are AAMI and RACV. So far our members have been paying insurance ranging from AUD 150 to AUD 300 a year (depending on car price and condition) covering theft, accident, fire and others. Insurance can be acquired and paid online.
Buying a used car means confronting with many uncertainty, breakdowns may occur during the most unexpected moment. Towing and road side assistance can be quit costly.
